위장에 생기는 문제가 건망증과 치매도? - 위장에서 만들어진 독소가 뇌 영역을 공격

나이가 들면서 오는 건망증이나 기억력 감퇴는 극히 자연스러운 일이다. 중요한 기억이 자리를 잡고 사소한 기억은 밀려나기 때문이다. 그러나 대부분 건망증이 심해지면 치매가 오는 것이 아닐까 두려워한다.

얼마 전까지는 건망증과 치매는 원인이 완전히 다르므로 관계가 없다는 정설이 일반적이었는데, 최근 건망증이 심한 사람이 치매에 더 잘 걸린다는 연구 결과가 있어 심한 건망증 환자들이 불안해한다. 그렇다면 건망증과 치매 사이에는 어떤 연관성이 있을까?

놀랍게도 건망증과 치매는 둘 다 위장과 관련이 있다. 위장관에서는 늘 섭취하는 다양한 음식에 대해 면역 전쟁을 치르고 있고 이 때문에 부산물이 많이 생긴다. 이 부산물이 신경 매개 물질인 사이토카인을 오염시키면서 신경 반응을 손상시키고 나아가 뇌 기능을 저하시킨다. 또한 담적 독소가 뇌신경 세포 시냅스에 축적되면, 뇌신경 세포의 기억과 정보 전달이 원활하게 이루어지지 않아 기억과 정보 전달 기능이 저하되면서 건망증이 생긴다. 또 축적이 지속될수록 뇌의 신경 세포가 변성되고 굳어져 치매에 이르게 된다.

한의학에서는 위장에서 만들어지는 노폐물인 ‘담음’이라는 독소가 뇌 영역을 공격하는 것을 너무나 당연한 현상으로 인식하고 있다. 물론 뇌는 방어 작업을 하지만 과로나 노화로 뇌기능이 약해지면 담 독소가 뇌를 오염시켜버린다. 이렇듯 위장이 뇌와 신경 질환 발생에 대해서도 연관성을 지니고 있다는 점에서 건망증과 치매는 위장으로 인한 뇌 오염병이라 할 수 있다.
